It is four years into the UN’s decade of decisive climate action, and the role of governments to enact meaningful policies has never been more critical. In the UK last week, the Labour Party achieved a record landslide win and Keir Starmer must now demonstrate true leadership by addressing climate change and biodiversity loss head on.
The new UK government should support the Climate & Nature Bill, a comprehensive legislative proposal that addresses the full extent of the climate and nature crisis in line with the most up-to-date science. We are pleased to have joined many other businesses to support this bill.
What is the Climate & Nature Bill?
The Climate & Nature Bill sets out three critical provisions to address climate change and biodiversity loss effectively:
Keeping temperature rises below 1.5°C: The Bill commits to maintaining global temperature rises below the crucial 1.5°C threshold, a target aligned with the Paris Agreement. The UK can lead by example by adopting stringent measures to reduce all emissions from aviation, shipping and industry, and to transition into renewable energy sources.
Reversing biodiversity loss by 2030: Biodiversity is the foundation of our ecosystems and ensures the resilience of our climate - which is why Ecosia focuses our tree planting on regenerating biodiversity hotspots. The UK has already committed internationally through the Global Biodiversity Framework at COP15 to halt and reverse biodiversity loss and it must now demonstrate this commitment.
Establishing a Climate and Nature assembly: The Bill proposes the creation of a climate and nature assembly to help develop an emergency strategy for transitioning away from fossil fuels. This assembly would ensure that the voices of citizens are heard, fostering dialogue and building consensus to ensure the transition to a sustainable future is inclusive and equitable.
How can you make a difference?
The first 100 days of the new government will be pivotal for keeping the pressure to ensure it supports policies that promote nature, like those outlined in the Climate & Nature Bill. As an engaged UK citizen, you have the power to influence this outcome. Here’s how you can help:
Write to your new MP: Writing to your MP to urge them to prioritize the Climate & Nature Bill is one of the most effective ways to ensure it gets into their legislative agenda. It's quick and easy to do, just click on through to the Climate and Nature Bill website.
Raise awareness: Share information about the Climate & Nature Bill with those around you. Use social media to spread the word and encourage others to take action. The more people who are aware of and support the Bill, the greater the pressure on the government to act.
Get involved in local activism: Join local environmental groups and participate in campaigns advocating for stronger climate and biodiversity policies. Grassroots activism is a powerful tool for driving change, and your involvement can make a difference.
The Climate & Nature Bill represents a bold and necessary step towards a climate safe future. Together we can make sure the next UK government leads the global effort to combat climate change and biodiversity loss!
