At Ecosia we’re building AI on our own terms – prioritizing energy-efficiency, privacy, and your experience.
But how much you use it should be on your terms. That’s why we’ve built AI-free search: it’s a way to turn off all AI features on Ecosia with one click – including AI overviews and AI Chat – for a traditional search engine experience. Simply go to Profile, then Settings, and select “AI-free searching”.
We understand that not everyone wants AI involved when they look for information, so our AI is there if you want it and easy to turn off if you don’t.
If you do choose to use some, or all of Ecosia’s AI features, you can know that it’s AI that’s better for you and the planet. We generate more clean energy than our AI uses and the model we use is more energy-efficient than mainstream options.
Plus, our AI runs almost entirely on a European model provider, in line with our mission to reduce dependence on non-European technology. We’re also building out our own search infrastructure over time, to decrease reliance on third-party providers altogether. It’s more private too, as it’s subject to more stringent EU privacy protections.
How much or whether you use AI is up to you – it’s your choice. But what doesn’t change is that searching on Ecosia still funds trees and climate action.
