Ecosia is now a default search engine option in Chrome!

*Update: Chrome's latest release with Ecosia as a search option has been postponed due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Read more here.

We have very exciting news. Chrome, the world’s most popular browser, has added Ecosia as an official search engine option around the world! That means users with the latest Chrome update can now plant trees while using the browser across all devices.

Ecosia has joined other search engines like Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo and Yahoo! as a default search engine option in 47 countries. Gaining visibility across Chrome’s huge user base means that it’s even easier for millions of people to make the switch to Ecosia and reforest the planet.

We have previously called for alternative search engines to be fairly represented by Google, so we welcome the decision by Chrome to support user choice by partnering with Ecosia.

It’s important that there are independent players in the market that don’t exist solely to make profit. We dedicate our profits to tree planting and we are also focused on privacy, so users can have a positive impact on the environment while having greater control over their personal information.

If you are an existing Chrome user, you have two options: install the Ecosia extension or update to the latest version of Chrome and switch your default search engine to Ecosia. The full rollout will happen on Tuesday March 17th*.

Don’t use Chrome? Our trusty extension is compatible with all major browsers, and you can install it here.

Happy searching! We can’t wait to plant more trees than ever. If you would like to learn more about Ecosia, check out where we plant our trees and how much money we spend on trees each month.
