Wetlands and mangrove ecosystems are nature’s own flood defense systems, shielding coastlines from storm surges, preventing erosion, and storing vast amounts of carbon. But human activity has destroyed much of these critical landscapes—today, around 70 species of mangroves are at risk of extinction.
