100%, 200%, 18 million: Our numbers in 2024

In many ways, 2024 felt like yet another year of wasted potential. Political promises crumbled, making way for a rollback of climate protections all over the world.

But that’s only part of the picture. Just as important is sharing bold, hopeful steps forward. That’s why each year we take stock of what we’ve earned, spent, and achieved together. By showing the outsized impact the Ecosia community has had, we aim to challenge others to meet that standard–and prove that better business is not only necessary, but possible.

Many companies are floundering under the weight of the climate emergency–or even turning a blind eye. Increasingly, long-winded sustainability reports act as a form of greenwashing: polished narratives that mask inaction, growing more elaborate even as the climate crisis worsens.

So when we share our impact, we keep it simple. Here’s what we were able to achieve together in 2024:

100% of profits dedicated to climate action

We continue to use all of our profits for the planet. While reforestation remains at the heart of our work, we’re expanding our impact across a broader range of climate action. In 2024 we helped accelerate the transition to clean energy by producing and investing in renewables. We also championed biodiversity with the launch of the Global Biodiversity Standard–a seal developed with leading experts to distinguish truly impactful reforestation from greenwashing. And we restored vital ecosystems–for instance, by re-wetting drained peatlands through our work with Zukunft Moor.

200% renewable energy produced

In 2024 we continued to produce twice as much renewable energy as needed to power all searches on Ecosia–meaning every search pushed out fossil fuels from the electricity grid. Our growing solar portfolio now includes a dedicated solar park, commercial-scale rooftop installations, and residential systems in Germany. Beyond Germany we’ve also invested in companies developing solar energy projects in other parts of the world, for example Ecoligo, which finances systems in the Global South.

18 million trees planted and protected

In 2024, we planted over 18 million trees in biodiversity hotspots all over the world–trees that support ecosystems and wildlife, bolster local livelihoods, and sequester carbon. Highlights from the year included planting and protecting 1600 different species, expanding our work to three new countries (Togo, Vietnam and the Netherlands), and pioneering new planting methods such as the use of “foxholes” in Madagascar to improve tree survival.

We also keep close track of our own carbon footprint, which last year amounted to 102t CO2. This came from activities like keeping our headquarters in Berlin running, train travel, and a few unavoidable flights, for example to our tree planting projects for monitoring purposes.

Our community continues to grow and last year we expanded our offering, launching our Ecosia desktop browser, to help you generate clean energy and fund climate action projects simply by browsing and searching.

That was last year–2025 is already shaping up to be a good one too! Thanks for making all of it possible.
