When Neema was a child, her village was surrounded by trees. Today, Mzase, like much of Tanzania, is suffering the consequences of decades of deforestation.
Without trees, several water sources around Mzase have dried up. The soil, being exposed to the elements, has become less fertile, temperatures have risen, and rainfall has grown scarcer. Neema remembers how green the landscape of her childhood was and she is determined to turn things around.
Today, Neema plants trees in the heat so that future generations can sit in their shade — like she did as a child.
